Following a suspected IRA bomb explosion, Coventry Scaffolding were called out by the Emergency services to help remove debris left hanging after the blast. No Fireman would risk cutting away the debris by hand so it was left to one of Coventry’s Scaffolders to erect a suspended cradle 500ft in the air in which to work whilst he cut off lumps of twisted metal with a hacksaw for five hours. The Scaffolder – Benjamin Watts - was later awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
